Once you're bitten by a particular dog you'll make sure it won't happened again. You'll avoid the dog. Or any animals that resembles the damn dog.
Same with people. Once you're hurt by a particular person, you'll avoid at any cost to interact with him/her again. Or anyone that resembles that nasty person.
If you just avoid problems at any cost, you'll risk getting screwed over and over again. People will treat you like a doormat. Yet, people will love you because you resembles a pet, you can't do harm to them. You will be popular and your name will be associated with friendliness.
There are moments where personalities clash. When they do, egos collide, resulted in scars for both sides. Both people lose.
Only grace from Heaven will heal these scars and let you two have great relationship again. Normally they won't go away until death do they part. Forgiveness is an ideal in which very few saints understand. Normal people don't understand, or just too lazy wanting to understand. They usually just follow whatever gut feelings they have at the moment. If it's hatred, then hatred it is.
The one who choose not to fight back may appear lose at the moment, but in the end they actually win. Because that other guy/girl with the big ego will still keep a relationship with the smaller ego. That may be a Christian goal. Avoid to fight back and swallows your pride. Pray for that other person. Give it to God. How enchanting.
However, which one of these two options are better for your health? That is, of course, if living a long life is your goal.
